INFO: How does MailMarshal SMTP calculate users for the purpose of licensing?

Expand / Collapse

This article applies to:

  • Trustwave MailMarshal (SEG)

Question:

  • How does MailMarshal SMTP calculate users for the purpose of licensing?
  • How can I view the current license count?
  • Are we in violation of our license?
  • How does MailMarshal calculate the number of users?

Symptoms:

  • The count of current users is more than number authorized by the license.
  • In versions where the count displays in the MailMarshal Console, under the Current Users section, the number of users is higher than the number permitted by the license

Information:

Any current user count displayed in the user interfaces is only a guide and has no effect on the operation of MailMarshal SMTP.

Licensing of the product is by the number of persons sending email. MailMarshal SMTP does not attempt to determine an accurate count of persons.

More details

In versions that display a "current user count," the count is calculated based on the internal SMTP addresses which have sent email in the last 28 days and is incremented each time an email goes outbound with a unique email address in the From field. This number may not be accurate because of email spoofing and multiple aliases.

The number of users is calculated by counting the outbound email addresses that MailMarshal SMTP sees from local domains over a rolling twenty-eight day cycle.

To view the current license count (versions 6.2 and below), in the MailMarshal Console, click Services and view the Licensed Users field. If this count exceeds the count permitted by the license, the number will be red. MailMarshal continues to process messages and apply Rules when the count exceeds the license.
