Trustwave SpiderLabs Security Advisory TWSL2019-006: Multiple Vulnerabilities in SanDisk SSD Dashboard Published: 07/11/2019 Version: 1.0 Vendor: SanDisk (www.sandisk.com) Product: SanDisk SSD Dashboard Version affected: SanDisk SSD Dashboard 2.3.3.0 and prior versions Product description: SSD disk management software. Finding 1: Hard-coded password inside the SanDiskSSDDashboard.exe binary Credit: Martin Rakhmanov of Trustwave CVE: CVE-2019-13466 The following string is inside the SanDiskSSDDashboard.exe binary: -pS@nD!sk.1 Monitoring process creation actions originated from the SanDiskSSDDashboard.exe when "Generate Report File" button is pressed under the Help menu reveals: "C:/Program Files (x86)/SanDisk/SSD Dashboard/7za.exe" a -tzip "C:/SSD_Dashboard_Report.zip" "C:/Users/martin/Desktop/SSD_Dashboard_Report_msinfo.txt" "C:/SSD_Dashboard_Report_msinfo.txt" -pS@nD!sk.1 In other words, a hard-coded string is used to encrypt the archive that contains System Information report which is later sent to the SanDisk support. This makes encryption useless in this specific case. Finding 2: Application Check for Update goes over HTTP instead of HTTPS Credit: Martin Rakhmanov of Trustwave CVE: CVE-2019-13467 Application Update function uses HTTP requests to check for new application versions: curl http://wddashboarddownloads.wdc.com/Dashboard/config/lista_updater.xml 2.3.3.0 10/12/2018 SanDiskSSDDashboardSetup.exe In untrusted environment this could be used to trick the application to download and run malicious code. One way to do this is via DNS poisoning so that HTTP requests will be handled by an attacker-controlled http server. Remediation Steps: Upgrade the SSD disk management software to SanDisk SSD Dashboard 2.5.1.0 Revision History: 04/12/2019 - Vulnerability disclosed to vendor 07/11/2019 - Patch released by vendor 07/31/2019 - Advisory published References 1. https://www.westerndigital.com/support/productsecurity/wdc-19009-sandisk-and-western-digital-ssd-dashboard-vulnerabilities About Trustwave: Trustwave is the leading provider of on-demand and subscription-based information security and payment card industry compliance management solutions to businesses and government entities throughout the world.
