Patch Tuesday, April 2019

Along with "Spring Showers" up here in the Northern Hemisphere, April also brings with it Microsoft's Patch Tuesday. This release includes patches for 75 CVEs and Adobe's Flash Update. The 75 CVEs are split between 14 rated "Critical" and 61 rated "Important". Outside of the typical Scripting Engine and XML Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerabilities, one vulnerability stands out as new. The vulnerability is in what is known as the IOleCvt ASP interface. The IOleCvt object enables an ASP Web page to perform string conversions, for instance from a Unicode string to ANSI. An attacker could exploit this by setting up a website or creating a malicious MS Office document that will trigger the vulnerability and execute arbitrary code on the victim's system.

The list of CVEs rated as "Important" are primarily the usual suspects in the MS Office Suite and Windows OS core components. Some of the stand-outs include a Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerability in ASP.NET Core, a Privilege Escalation vulnerability in Azure DevOps Server and two Spoofing vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange Server. Specifically the Microsoft Exchange vulnerabilities reside in Outlook Web Access (OWA) and could allow an attacker to inject content including malicious scripts into an OWA session by convincing a user to click on a malicious link.

Luckily none of this month's vulnerabilities have been disclosed prior to today and there is no indication that there are any exploits in the wild. This means that you have a great opportunity to patch now before criminals are able to get their act together.
