#TWContest: The top 'origin' of attack is...

The question was…

"What was the top "origin" of attack as seen through Trustwave SpiderLabs investigations in 2011?"

The answer is...

"Unknown" or "Unknown Origin" and was part of the "International Perspectives" section (pages 10-16) in the Trustwave 2012 Global Security Report. The SpiderLabs team at Trustwave investigated over 300 data breaches in 2011. When we find evidence of a compromise combined with logfiles or other data that contains attacker source IP addresses, we store them in our data gathering database. In the cases where we can clearly see an attacker coming from a specific or set of specific IP addresses, we plot them on a world map. In the cases where the IP address is seen to change often or is routed through an anonymizer such Tor or we do not include them on a world map, rather we place this in a category of "Unknown".

The winner is...
